The Crowe family live in Kansas, U.S.A. five-year-old David looked after his three younger sister because his mother drove his two older sister to school and father, Mr. Donald Crow was away
at work. David had lost an eye in accident a year before. He was
sitting on his bed, putting on his shoes, when he heard a loud explosion. Suddenly, the walls and ceiling of his bedroom caught fire. He had to climb up onto a chair to reach her. He wrapped her up in a blanket and carried her out to safety with his sickly sister Peggy. He led her gently out, comforting all the way for Leanna safety. David ordered his sister to remain where they were. Then, he ran down the road, barefooted, to get help. For his fearless rescues, David was given the “Young American Medal for bravery”. The little hero’s family watched proudly as President Lyndon B. Johnson pinned the medal of him.
